2016 Summary

The advantage of keeping a diary, or to be more accurate a log, of my car exploits, is that I have a record to look back on to see what I have been doing.

Or in the case of 2016 - not doing.

Keeping a monthly note of the mileage also helps because it confirms or challenges what you remember about which car has seen the most use. Did I use the Ferrari at all, was the Aston the car of choice – or did the new boy in the stable, the Caterham, get all the attention ? Who was running the MK2 Golf and what broke this year ?

Occasionally I also write longer articles about specific trips. The Alpine events tend to get a write up in the club magazine if I am lucky. All big car shows get a picture album on social media and for the Le Mans Classic, which I have attended on most even years, I even print book of photos which always includes a few lines on how the car I take behaved – traditionally the E-type  - and traditionally a ‘phew, I managed to get home OK again’.

The Golf Mk7 vs the SAAB Aero comparison is also interesting - in a nerdy way.

All of which brings us neatly to this table with a summary of 2016:

Miles
Trips

Aston
1488
33
Alpine
1091
61
E-Type
807
34
308
596
22
Caterham 7
956
52

Golf MK2
2526

SAAB
11526

Golf MK7
8165

The raw statistics show a surprising winner, as the Aston seems to have beaten all-comers. No long runs in the Aston to Yorkshire, Olney or London this year either - although somehow it still racked up most miles. Mainly I suspect going backwards and forwards to Brentwood for servicing and tyre changes at 120 miles a pop. Which if we are brutal was about 20% of the miles.

The surprise runner-up is the Alpine which did well again, exceeding the last three years totals and crossing the 1000 mile barrier. I say surprising as it is the last choice for the longer runs. However it does have the club ‘organisation’ behind it - so shares the time with other Alpine owners – giving impetus to use it on organised runs and to meetings.

Looking for reasons behind the rest of numbers it’s not clear. Every year I aim to give each car a long run of a couple of hundred miles at least. So this year what one got left out ?

The E-type missed the run to the Classic Le Mans due to the wedding and then broke down before it could complete the three legs of the Round Brittan run, which would have been around 400 additional miles (on top of the initial evening dash to Cromer) which would have taken it above the 2015 total but not near the 2014 – which was boosted by nearly 1000 (mainly glorious) miles in France. It was in disgrace for several months too as I could not find the rattle and then off the road for the dynamo.

The Caterham, which is shared with Oliver, has even done fewer miles than 2015 - during which it was only in the fleet for 7 months of the year. It was well used, second only to the Alpine, but only for short ‘blasts’ to keep it fresh, although this year so far it has not needed it’s plugs cleaning.

The member of the team that was picked less seems to be the Ferrari. It missed out on the Silverstone event and the Cranleigh Car Show which boosted it in 2014. No trips to events, nor Milton Keynes etc. Even so, just shy of 600 miles is quite a lot less than 2015 or indeed 2013.

The Mk2 Golf did a credible 2500+ miles with trips to Liverpool clocking up the miles.

Moving onto moderns I think I see where the miles went.

The SAAB exceeded last year even though it only had two months of commuting through the mid-winter to Witham vs three months at the end of 2015. That was made up for by the trip to France via Germany in the late Spring and then another trip to France via Devon and probably 100’s of short trips to the dump and doing working jobs.

The Mk7 Golf was on a par to last year and although quite a bit under the SAAB has still accumulated almost 19k miles in just over two years.

I probably drove over 16k miles in all: c11k in the SAAB or MK7 Golf and c5k in the toys.

Final jaunt of 2016

Aero across to MK. Clocking up another 100+ miles.

Friday, 30 December 2016

Another few yards

Moved the SAAB across the drive in the mist.

Cold and dreary day. Nothing else moving.

Thursday, 29 December 2016

Chilly 60+ in Aero

About 60 miles across Suffolk and back acting as Antique van. Nice day for a drive but need to top up the screen wash with some soap at least.

Car very dirty too.

Wednesday, 28 December 2016

In the murk

Misty morning and evening. SAAB should be used to it.

Too dreary for other cars.

Tuesday, 27 December 2016

Another A Day

Aero back to Oliver's with another load - that's most of the forging gear cleared now.

Who'd move that on boxing day ?

Aero used to tow the trailer, to move the Anvil across to Oliver's.

Very heavy load - but the trailer seems to cope. A bit bouncy on the pot-holes.

Sunday, 25 December 2016

Nil by tire

See last year ?

Saturday, 24 December 2016

Taxi Service

Aero to meal and back again. About it - but a traditional Xmas time.

Friday, 23 December 2016

Beast Released pt 2.

Had to move Aston out of the garage and just starting it gave me the energy to take it round the block in the blustery winter wind.

The day was as a grey and menacing as the paintwork. But the car felt solid and powerful. Nice !

Thursday, 22 December 2016

Two more out and about

Caterham run round to salvage yard. A bit twitchy on the wet dirty roads and even had the back end step out at a junction one when I applied a bit too much power - stepped back neatly though.

Had been warming the Alpine up when out as it needed a run. Started first time but felt a bit in need of it too for the first few miles. Then settled down. Got a toot-toot and a thumbs up too from a chap on a motorbike on the A12.

Seemed to have lost some brake fluid from the rear off side wheel. Filled up back to the level again so will have to look in a few weeks.

Cleaned and dried it off before putting back into the bubble this time.

Wednesday, 21 December 2016

Just looked at the miles

No car action so looked at the time I used the cars in 2016 and the miles.

Not a conclusive story yet, but looking like the Aston was the most used - even without a long trip.

Tuesday, 20 December 2016

Full boot

Aero with a boot full of tools to town and then to jobs.

Monday, 19 December 2016

Fighting back

Took the plunge and even though the weather was not perfect I got a car out.

A short fan heater boost to the general temperature of the Caterham and we were off. Good drive too - no gloves needed as it was quite warm - and spirited run around the block followed. Noise is still excellent and the moderate heat from the engine keeps the chills off.

I'm still yet to change the plugs this year since the spec was changed to a more 'cruising speed -friendly' type.

Also got the Mk2 out again - it's filthy inside and out though. Perhaps I can convince the owner to clean it. Run to the far dump for recycling trip gave it a good run.

Boot-lid does not stay up though - which is annoying - and one of the clips if broken off. Oh and the headlining is still falling off. And the paintwork needs attention. And it's losing water too. Oh and it does not seem to warm up properly.

Goes nicely though !

Sunday, 18 December 2016

Riding along again

Short trip in Oli's Audi - forgotten how nice a new car is inside - or would be if it was cleaned.

Can't say he's not using it to it's full though.

Looks like the Mk7 Golf.

So perhaps it's me who is out of step.

Saturday, 17 December 2016

Golf Buggy

Mk7 to shops as passenger. About all.

Dull grey and misty days.

Friday, 16 December 2016

Jobs again

Clearing the boat more.

SAAB boot full of random stuff again.

Thursday, 15 December 2016

Golf Out

MK2 run out for shopping. Still going nicely.

Wednesday, 14 December 2016

Warm Seat

Weather just dull and raining - so SAAB run down A14.

Tuesday, 13 December 2016

Low Petrol is the highlight

That's the highlight - still dull and misty so Aero again. Running low on fuel.

Monday, 12 December 2016

Dull Stuff

Dull mid December days of rain and mist. Aero only one fit for this weather.

Sunday, 11 December 2016

and dragging back

More crowded on the run out.

Also so many 20mpg zones it's hard to keep up.

Highlight earlier in the day was seeing Jeremy Corbin running in the park.

NB Historical footnote - Leader of the Labour party

Saturday, 10 December 2016

London Drag

Aero run down to London. Easy until off the track and into the side roads.

Night-time walk back seemed to be Porsche Territory.

Not wrapped, just the dew fallen.

Friday, 9 December 2016

Not even registering

So dull a day I can't remember anything about it.

However it was another Aero jobs day - with a run to Ipswich through the traffic in the morning and then into town to collect and drop off stuff in the afternoon.

Thursday, 8 December 2016

Dull Day (again)

Pottered in the SAAB - remembered how well it goes - hassled by a Audi TT.

Big front wheel drive lump. But never-the-less a great driver's car.

Wednesday, 7 December 2016

Activity (of a sort)

Decided that the Alpine should go into the bubble.

So it did.

Therefore swapped the Caterham into its slot in the garage. Not sure how much I'll use either for a while - or why I put the hardtop on the Alpine now I think of it.

Anyway nice 'round the block' in the Seven - weather warming up - no need for gloves.

Final act was to put the Aston on the charger.

Tuesday, 6 December 2016

Tuesday nothingness

Another cold and damp day - did see the cars when I opened the garage door though.

Monday, 5 December 2016

You guessed it

Aero Pottering

Sunday, 4 December 2016

Seven in the Sunshine

Run out in the early (and warmer) part of the day.

Car going well - not had to clean the plugs this year (yet) either.

Aero popped into town and to the dump again - as the sun went down.

Earlier I tried cleaning off the 'damage' from the MK7. No better.

Saturday, 3 December 2016

Where did Saturday Go ?

Dull day - pottering.

Did ride in Mk7 to new-build - that was all.

Friday, 2 December 2016

The picture that keeps on giving

Found the picture of the E-Type in the SNG Catalogue. So it's really out there now. Looks good printed.

Also ran out in the Mk2 - going well.

Thursday, 1 December 2016

Oh Well.

Ride in MK7.

Wednesday, 30 November 2016

Just one out

Swede in the cold.

Tuesday, 29 November 2016

One in - One out

Put the 308 into the bubble after pumping the tyres up to 45psi.

Then Alpine run to take photos of wildlife at Manningtree.

I looked for birds while people admired the car sitting there next to the frosty riverbank.

Monday, 28 November 2016

Another dump run

Aero out again to the dump.

But then treated myself with the Aston too. Reset the Bluetooth and removed several links and the alarm stayed off. Hope that fixes it.

Then late night shooting cars on the A12. Much better than last time I tried.

Passed the first real gritting lorry as well on the way back - and it was gritting.

Sunday, 27 November 2016

Packed Up

Aero in short but packed trips - tools then dump run.

Got to sort this out.

Saturday, 26 November 2016

Fill me Up !

Ran the AERO down to about 16 miles - flashed this up again.

Clipped the front wheel at the shops and damaged the alloys - again. They are really poor now.

And you can't get a 8' sheet in the back without it scraping the roof lining.

However the Mk7 took a hit. On a wall. Opps.

Finally noticed the mileage on the 308 this year - lowest ever at just shy of 600 miles. Why am I using the cars so little - is it spreading out the miles - or missing long trips ?

Indulgance

Early run to the boat to take off bedding etc,

You can't go wrong with a big Swede. Chap in Volvo did not see the funny side of it though.

Then took the Aston out for a run - it had been ignored for a while. Shopping trip but enough to lighten the mood.

However, the Bloody alarm went off again - their suggestion is that the iPhone has problems attaching to both the car and the alarm as the car gets in first.

Will try again next week.

Filled up with petrol - poor filler again. Another niggle, but nice comments from chap in station.

Then took the Ferrari out in the sunshine and to show off - filled it up at the same station too.

Thursday, 24 November 2016

Bright Spark(s)

Collected the 308 after the service.

Saw a striking blue DeThomaso in Grimaldi's with the 308 behind it.

It was dark by the time I got back - so indulged in nighttime shot.

However, there had been a problem with the lighter falling apart and shorting. Looked like it cooked the orange band that went around it to a crisp - although checking photos it was always damaged.

I though about how I could fix is all the way home. Then decided to cut it off and dye the leather. It came off easily and using a marker pen I disguised the missing ring. Not sure I'll ever know.

Wednesday, 23 November 2016

Alpine runs

Two Alpine runs out - shops and Mum's. Tools in the boot and a bit of rain.

But the car(s) looking good in the garage.

Tuesday, 22 November 2016

Bridge closed

So took 1 hour to do the usual round the block - cars and lories parked on the road waiting for the bridge to open. It was closed for 12 hours in the rain.

I suspect it's a push for a northern Ipswich bypass.

Monday, 21 November 2016

More SAAB pottering

Just a quick run for jobs.

Sunday, 20 November 2016

No Alpines at all

Met up with fellow Alpine owners - took SAAB - they took their moderns too. Storms forecast - sensible option.

Saturday, 19 November 2016

Marking Time

Run out in Mk7.

Thought about exercising the Aston but cold grey skies made me think otherwise.

Friday, 18 November 2016

Two by Two

Cleaned the E-Type and put it away in the bubble. No more evidence of a water leak ?

Then swapped the cars around. 2 by 2. Caterham out first - then went for a great drive in the cold.

Golf just got  move around the drive.

Then Alpine off to do jobs.

Thursday, 17 November 2016

Dodging Showers

Alpine out for a dash round the block as the rain started - so came back in and cleaned it off using the water.

Wednesday, 16 November 2016

Mayo

Yes some mayonnaise on the Golf Mk2 oil filler cap.

Topped it up with oil and did the tyres. Not much needed really but it shows the water loss is probably through the head gasket.

Then turned my attention to the Jag.

E-type light went out on choke as it was warm. Might be the solution after all.

No water dripped out either after 20 mins on the road but I did notice the wire frame protecting the radiator was loose. Probably that pidgin four years ago.

Forgot to say the car goes really very verr verrry well at the moment too.

Tuesday, 15 November 2016

Did not set foot in a car

Not even a visit to the garage.

Checked though and the Dynamator needs a higher revs to start charging - one it is running it's fine though. Like the Ferrari.

Monday, 14 November 2016

Dreary Drives

Aero for load lugging - rain and wet weather stopped any other fun.

Sunday, 13 November 2016

Red light on and then off again

Spent time fitting a new connection to the dynamator. New wire spliced in, new terminal and shrink wrapped ends.

Light still on for a few seconds and then with a rev it goes out.

Oh and she's definitely leaking water from somewhere.

Nice 'toy car' pic on the drive - again.

Just like the Ferrari I thought ?

Must ask why - take it out tomorrow if dry - needs a clean and then put away for the winter.

Afternoon Golf Mk7 run and then finished off with Aero and Trailer to deliver more to Oli's new house.

Friday, 11 November 2016

Load after Load

Aero and Golf Mk7 as work horses and transport.

Also glad to hear Mk2 start at 6:30 this morning.

Thursday, 10 November 2016

More loads and lugging and Brakedown Service

Three boot loads - plus trailer loads as well.

Mix of stuff too - from wood to sinks.

The late evening jaunt to start the Mk2 - lights left on in station car park.

Highlight is the 3 page spread in Low Flying though.

Wednesday, 9 November 2016

Slogging through drizel

Aero out again - wanted the warmth and comfort to an Alpine meeting.

No one else brought their cars and there was nothing worth a pic in the car park either.

Tuesday, 8 November 2016

Red light back on

Started the E-type to see ... and yes it's back on. Cleaned the wire and after a few revs it went out again. Perhaps it need a longer run to bed the bushed in ?

Two Golf Mk7 trips late pm. Nice to drive a new car. Still feels like a treat.

Monday, 7 November 2016

A 4 Jobs - C 4 News

Aero again - wimped out on the classics due to the cold.

But got the latest Low flying with my three page spread !

Sunday, 6 November 2016

It's Golf Time

Needed to get insurance pictures of the Golf Mk2 - so had it washed and then did the usual shots.

Followed up by some more atmospheric ones on the drive.

Aero to dump and then jaunt just carrying boxes.

Saturday, 5 November 2016

Red Light Back

Started the E-Type hoping for the result I wanted, but expecting the result I got. The red ignition warning light was back on.

Looked at the warning light connection on the control box and no fiddling changed anything. However taking the wire off the dynamo and reconnecting it had the desired effect. The light went out.

Ran for a few miles with headlights and wipers on - charged well about 1500 rpm (35 mph) - not sure it's better than the old dynamo to be honest.

I'll measure the output and clean up the connections when I can.

Car into bubble for now - a bit dirty though.

Aero and Mk7 had utility runs too in the afternoon.

Friday, 4 November 2016

Sort of ... fixed itself

Fitted the Dynator to the E-type.

Harder than I thought as the new belt seemed fat too short to get the unit in place. The old split belt was fine (stretched ?) and luckily so was the back-up one I had in the boot. The packet said 1010 mm so I'll look for another one as well as a proper spare.

New one (right) is definitely lighter, but did not work when I first started it up. Red charging light went out after a bit of revving. Like the new electrons needed to flush out the old ones...

The pulley is also now in no danger of hitting the frame.

Rain stopped me doing a test drive so that will have to wait - time will tell if it's a permanent fix.

Earlier Aero utility run - an no sign of 'clonking'.

Thursday, 3 November 2016

SAAB back

Collected Aero and it's big bill - should keep us going for a few years. Looked good on the drive.

Dynamo arrived after dark so will for tomorrow.

Wednesday, 2 November 2016

Alpine Nights

Ran the Alpine full of tools for jobs as AERO is still in the garage.

Returned in the dark - at 5:30 - I guess it's Winter.

Tuesday, 1 November 2016

Back to Black

Well a dark metallic grey anyway.

Speedo still seems to be acting oddly. Also the alarm needed resetting again.

Monday, 31 October 2016

Aero in

And the verdict is that it needs new rear bushes, a tire, brakes and disks. That means we'll have to keep it longer - as it was the plan anyway that's not a problem.

Nice small Alfa in there too as well as a 900 being worked on.

Sunday, 30 October 2016

Luxury Crusuing

Run out in the XJS strait 6. Drove well quiet and goes faster than it feels, although leans a bit.

Rides like an updated E-Type I guess.

Saw some interesting Lancia cars on the way back. One I'd never seen before - below a Lancia Prisma Symbol.

Above a pair of Delta Integrale.

Then headed back in the MK7. 50 mpg bettered.

Last thing I started the MK2 just to check it works - it does fine.

Saturday, 29 October 2016

Vauxhal Van

Riding around in Steve's Zafira people carrier. No many flash cars up t' North.

Oh for the space like this - and even a chance to sort it out !

Can you count them ?

Friday, 28 October 2016

G2N

MK7 up to the North. Made the journey easier with adaptive cruse control.

... And cheaper with 50 mpg (if you are careful).

Thursday, 27 October 2016

Meeting Mr A

Took Caterham out in the sun - showed it off to previous Martin.

Did look fine in the sunshine too.

Wednesday, 26 October 2016

G2R again

Run to boat. Then back.

Tuesday, 25 October 2016

More jobs and stuff

Golf out and into town for a run. Went well too, although the radio has lost one side of the speakers.

Followed up with the usual Aero run for jobs.

Big guns out

Aston to shops and Aero for jobs.

Still liking the darker wheels.

Looks like the petrol gauge might be playing up though  - seems to go down too quickly after 50%.

Oh and Alarm needed re-setting after iPhone upgrade.

Sunday, 23 October 2016

More walking

Less driving.

Saturday, 22 October 2016

Two at the car show

End of year car meet at Shotley.

I took the Caterham ...

and Jana the Alpine.

Great selection of cars there as normal.

Then nighttime Alpine run too.

Walking and snapping

Jaunt in the Golf Mk7 then walk.

Past a very red Merc 280E...

and then a very black Defender in the car park of the pub.
