The fleet is back together again.
Trip in MK7 to pick up the 308 first thing - gosh it looked good amongst the other exotic metal.
Will SORN it though now for the winter siesta.
Next was the AERO lugging wood around. I think we got 1.5 tonnes in the back.
Then a Caterham run to shops in the dying light. Tried to find a spot to take autumn themed photo afterwards.
Final run on the MK2 to fill with petrol before another SORN.

Sitting comfortably
More Aero pottering to station.
Rain tomorrow so no more Golfing - I'll be putting it on SORN for November.

Areo Splashing
SAAB through the heavy rain down to work and then back again in the dark.
Safe and strong and long wheel base.

Soft SAAB Seats
Needed the long wheelbase SAAB today - its surprising how it comforts the car and softened the bumps on the A12 - and I was in need of that after the late run back yesterday.
Anyway one day they will fill in the ruts.

Spectre
Two thoughts.
1. Went to Aston Martin private showing of the new Bond film Specrte. Quite good as it goes. Did not take the Aston (and could not find the private parking) although several people did.
That's a Vanquish leaving when we did at 11:45 pm.
2. The second Spectre is of a speeding ticket - as the speed crept up about 1:00 AM as I came out of the average zone a bit too fast.
We'll see.

Two plugs good - four plugs better
Spent the morning cleaning the dust from inside and engine on the E-type. Then did the wheels - they came up well but are definitely in need of work.
Photographed the car but the light was not very good.
Then took the Caterham for a blast. Hard to start and very lumpy - it's the first time I've driven it since I cleaned the plugs.
Can you spot the problem ?
Some fool had forgotten to put two leads back on. It started better but was still very lumpy - cleared after a few mins though - I guess I soaked the plugs too. Also leaking from the middle exhaust port - might explain the plug fouling ?
Nice warm blast around the block though after that.

Well it's Red
Picked up the E-type and bonnet looks very good. Paint colour matches well too.
Only one problem ... No number plate

E and Wizz
Thirty five mins to Witham. Where was the traffic.
E-type collection tomorrow, have to leave the 308 until next weekend.

Aston Back via ..
Areo to station early, then late running train to London, The walk, then a lift 18 floors up.
Spiral staircase down one floor and 4 hours later walk back up. Lift 18 floors down again, walk to new train, then take taxi.
Look at V12 convertible then drive the Aston home. Aston hits 17000 miles.
Then MK7 to station then Aero home.
Simple.
Nice to see the winter wheels back though.

Ahhhg
Dull drive to the station early on in the rain - but SAAB as sensible choice.
Ahhhg as now all three cars in the garage are going to be ready on the same Saturday - I might get two but I doubt I'll get all three.
Oh well - first world problems - and a lesson to get the work/MOTs done in the spring or at lest stagger them better.

More road troubles
Almost two hours to get in today - and that was by avoiding the first crash.
Well at least I found an alternative route via the small villages in mid Essex. I need to research them more.
Also got the radio in the Golf working better. Almost civilized.
More gridlock and lorries.

Two Monday Thumps
Two crashes on the way into work this morning. One just 4 miles from home, the other going the other way luckily, Should have gone via the country lanes.
Traffic stop-start for lots of the way - then it just clears...
Run back at 6:00 was free and easy though - even at Tescos.
Also spotted I got this from SNG Barrett.

Empty nest
Now got three cars in someone else's garage - and none in this one.
Should start to see them coming back in the next few weeks.
Cleaned a bit of the floor again. Oh and mopped up the leak from the Golf.

Autumn leaves
Definitely Autumn in Emberton - drive covered in leaves.
Arrived in the murky weather after run to drop off the Aston to get the wheels swapped over.

Locked and Loaded
Crook lock on the MK2 Golf. Parked in a safe place in Witham I think though and many more valuable cars in there too.
Radio really is quite poor though so not loaded in the US sense.
Getting used to it by now though.

It's got a radio
Aero has a decent radio and against the VW that counts for a lot on an hours commute. Dash to station this morning was dark - early mornings need good lights.
Anyway I might upgrade the Golf radio or SORN the car for a bit - I'm not sure if it will get much use over Winter if I am honest

Back to AERO
Better commute I would have to admit in the SAAB.
Saw a Vauxhall Monaro VXR 6.0 on the way there. Definitely a Q car.

Lowered expectations
Mk2 in service for commute - shadowed by a lowered Golf most of the way today. Running in convoy. Getting dark on the way back now.
Radio is knackered and the road noise is quite high - wheel wobbles a bit too so L wonder if tytes are pumped up ok. Oh and the tick over is high as I've not changed it back since I fiddled with it to stop the stalling.
Looks like a 60 min commute will be standard in the mornings - coming home 50 mins. Might try alternative route next week on the way in to avoid A12/A14 tailback.

NGK
First commute in Mk2 to Witham. Car went well and looked good in the sunshine - journey spoiled by crash and 90 mins in the car.
Slight heating up but no smell.
Evening run 50 mins back fine.
Evening taking out the spark plugs from the Caterham #2 is a bit oily and probably the culprit.

The chill starts
G2R - Half a day sailing - and a bit of a bump in the lock - due to the high wind.
It will buff out...
Then run in Alpine round the block - started to get a bit cold - only had three layers on.
Highlight was the very old MG that came up behind me, then turned off before I could get a good look.
Vintage Um...

Short of time
Each weekend will be squeezing in the jobs for a while.
Started with cleaning the Mk2 as I'm going to use it for a few commutes so I spruced it up. Clean, Polish, vacuum, and re-blacked the bumpers etc.
Looked good again, but found a long list of problems.
Indicator light broken, bumper loose, trim missing, CD player broken, front wing bent, rear arch covers not attached at the bottom, rust in passengers door bottom, sills need painting, paint scratched in several places. The list goes on.
Also squeezed in a 60 mile run in the Caterham. Got photographed by someone in a car driving past - which was s bit odd.
Fuel gauge does rush down after 50% or 100 miles.

Commuting for real
c70 miles round trip in the Aero to work today. A12 ok each way but much busier on the home run.
Highlight was the office.
Thursday, 8 October 2015
Slow puncture
Reading prediction of the classic car boom slowly deflating. Not a crash as most cars in the mainstream are bought by cash not credit - but never the less high profile sales of 'collections' are being reported more frequently.
Me - I've had a week of Aero commuting. Comfortable and warm it was too.

Car vs Train
More rainy committing in the SAAB.
Three days on the train and not one of the six trains has had a perfect journey.
I'll see what the A12 is like soon - car vs train.

Monday, 5 October 2015
The commute starts
SAAB to the station for the first time now I'm back at work. It will earn its keep again.
Run back in the dark and rain - this will be the trend to come.
Nice red MGB GT sitting in the car part though which was the highlight.

Short Trips
Aero to town first thing, then fitted new battery to Alpine and went to dump old one.
Afternoon blast in the Carerham through the small lanes with Oli - met up with a friend with 2 Ginettas - greedy.
Final utility trip out into the dark.
Oh and the Caterham mag might use some of the blog.

No 2 to the shop
Took the E-type into the painters am. Looked good in the garage - showing off the banner.
Should be about a month and then we should have a shiny new bonnet.
When we got here they were just finishing a C-type replica in Ecurie Ecosse colours - a mid tone blue. It was from Suffolk Sportscars - looked good.
Then we took the Alpine out in the sun and came across this in the car park. it was splattered with Lotus 7 decals.

An original Lotus 7 ?
Well J prefix cars are Aug '91 to July '92 so I doubt it. The internet confirmed it's a MK Indy kit - looked good though, except for the bonnet. Which is where we started...

September Blat

The first long run in the Caterham was early September on
the Carrotland Big Blat. Organised by the chaps in the local section of the
Lotus 7 club it wound its way across Suffolk and Norfolk ending up at RAF
Marham. Carrotland is the slightly self-effacing name for the combined
Suffolk/Norfolk area – obviously referencing its rural nature.
We were one of the first teams let loose and Oliver did
first leg from Stonham Barns to Thwaite St Mary which was supposed to be about
60 miles. The roads first took us back South and then across East into deepest
Suffolk – headed for the coast and then swerved inland again. All the roads we
empty and many strait or gentry curved – excellent blatting routes thanks to
the organisers. Oliver obviously enjoyed himself – even with a nervous father
pointing out SLOW marks in the road. Pushing the car hard it responded with the
raw energy of a highly tuned four cylinder and surprised several other drivers
with its pace – not to mention the petrol/oil bouquet coming out of the howling
exhaust.
The only blot was one mid-route, where an incomplete set of diversion signs saw many of us lost and circling through villages time and time again
much to the bemusement of the locals and other Caterhams going in opposite
directions.
When we stopped for the break we talked to other blatters
and how they got lost/found etc. and compared cars. We also decided to try to
follow someone else on the second leg – as navigating was going to be Oliver’s
job next. I took the next stint and as we swept through the country lanes
pressed the car hard – listening to the mechanical engine revving you could
almost hear the oil splashing on the valves and the parts turning it was so
alive.
I was having so much fun that I declined the last fuel
stop and ran on. However, as we approached the airbase the fuel gauge hit zero
- I’d been watching the needle drop alarmingly quickly for a while as it does
when it passes half empty - but I’d gambled on a bit more range. We made the
base on fumes and although we asked around there was no petrol we could have on
site.
A bit worried and deflated we chatted to teams over
lunch, including a Father/Son-in-law couple that were bonding over the car the
father having 2 uninterested daughters. Chatting we found out that people had
come as far as Surrey and Wales for the blat, as well as one of the closest a chap and his wife from the
next village to us in Suffolk. It was obvious that everyone had thoroughly
enjoyed themselves.
We tagged on to the back of the line of cars assembling
for the photo shoot in case we ran dry and as a consequence found ourselves embarrassingly in
the best place in the grid of cars in front of the Tornado jet fighter.
Leaving we pottered as quietly as we could – even
coasting down-hill with other Caterhams overtaking us wondering why. As we
looked for the local garage the gauge went below the empty mark but we made it
- to find they only sold 3 star. I decided to fill up anyway, give it a double
Octane boost and drive gently back.
One thing I learned is that 180 miles is the limit with
very gentle driving.
Overall it was a great turnout, with about 35 cars making
it to the final destination and others joining for part of the trip. Most cars
were two-up so about 60 enthusiastic members did the run and on a mostly fine
day only had to dodge the odd shower. We both enjoyed ourselves and will
definitely look to join another blat next year.
Next day having got home, but full of 3* I decided to
drain the tank and fill up with Super Unleaded. Using a small external fuel
pump that I had bought for the Alpine I carefully pumped the fuel out using the
battery charging connection as a convenient power off-take. Stupidly I then
crossed the wires trying to remove the clips, welding them to the fitting in a
shower of sparks. Another job on the list was to fix that.
Starting the car I also noticed it was not showing the usually very high
oil pressure when cold and checking it the oil was very low on the dipstick – in fact it
took several pints to top back up. So that’s one to watch after a few hundred
miles of very hard driving.
One things that has troubled me since owning the
car is what to call it. It is a Caterham Seven Super Sprint, but do I call it a
Seven – harking back to its origins – or a Caterham ? I’d like to think that as
it is one of the last S3 designed cars (Caterham re-started producing in 1974
after taking over the manufacture of the S4 a year earlier) that it is
therefore a “continuation” of the Seven. However, I’m currently sticking to
Caterham.
Not my cup of tea
Ran the 308 to Grimaldi's for the service - tried to get it there before the roads turn icy this year.
Had four lambourghinis in - not really the style I like to be honest - I'd prefer the modern ones - or those from the 1960's.
